Building Progress
Here are some photos to give you a behind-the-scenes tour and update on the progress of our new building. Things are really starting to come into place now. Signature's staff will be moving into the admin offices of the building in only 78 short days! You can only imagine how excited we all are.

This is a shot from outside looking at the front of the new building. The solid glass facade you see on the second story is our new lobby. This photo also gives you a look at the "signature" sign that Eric talked about yesterday. The letters have orange neon installed behind them, so at night they emit a really cool glow. Eric and I checked out the test run last night and it really looks great.

Here's a closer shot of the "signature" sign being installed.

This is the framework for our grand staircase that takes you from the box office entrance to the main lobby and both theaters located on the second floor. Talk about an entrance that will take your breath away! When it's done all the stairs will have LED lighting built into them so we can illuminate them with any variety of colors.

This is a shot of our lobby under construction. It will be a big difference from what we have now. On the left-hand side of the photo you can see metal brackets sticking out of the wall. These will hold a 20'H x 80'W mesh billboard. Photos from some of Signature's most memorable productions will make up the billboard, which you'll be able to see from the street through the lobby window as you walk around the Village at Shirlington.

This angle shows you the amazing view you'll have of the Village from the lobby. The building on the left with the blue awnings will have rental apartments on top and new resturants below.

Here's you first glimpse into The Ark Theatre, our new 99-seat space. Without a wide angle lens it's really impossible to represent how great the two theater spaces are going to be. During the upcoming 2006-07 season we're producing two of our four-part Cabaret series in this space, plus the Female British Invasion Play Festival, which consists of Sarah Kane's CRAVE and the world premiere of NEST.

And here's your first look at The Max Theatre, our 299-seat, double-height space. This shot is taken from stage level and the space is really going to be amazing. I can't wait until we put a show in here. Next season our first show in the space will be INTO THE WOODS. We'll also mount productions of the world premiere musical SAVING AIMEE and the American premiere of THE WITCHES OF EASTWICK. All the stuff you see on the ground in this picture is ductwork that will be installed up above. We worked tirelessly with consultants from the Talaske Group to insure all the acoustics in this room were just right. One of the many pieces to getting the acoustics right involved the selection and installation of the HVAC system. Much of the ductwork in this theater is 6-feet tall. That's so we can properly cool the entire theater, but do it in a super quiet fashion that won't detract from all the action happening on the stage.

Here's a shot of The Max from the dress circle seating area. These seats are going to offer a very neat way to see shows.

Our current dressing room situation in the garage space can only be described as "cramped." This hall in the new building houses dressing rooms all the way down both sides. We'll have space for almost 50 actors! There are also showers, several bathrooms, and a wardrobe room off this hall for the actors to use.

This is the largest of our three rehearsal rooms where Eric will create all his magic. The floor is what's called a "sprung" floor. It's constructed with several layers of plywood with about 3/4" air underneath. This creates a bit of spring to the floor allowing it to "give" as the dancers move. This is true of the floors in all three rehearsal rooms as well as the two theaters.
So that's a brief tour of the building progress as of today. Stay tuned for more updates in the coming weeks.
