Moving right along
MY FAIR LADY Day 3
August 31
Third day of music with the entire company and we hit the ground running. Everyone’s doing really great picking up all the harmonies and the sound of all the voices combined is thrilling. I’m really surprised at how fast everyone’s learning the music. While the songs are obviously well known, the harmonies are not. Sally Murphy, who’s playing Eliza, is already off book for a number of her songs and Terry Currier, who’s playing Doolittle, says he’s ready to start dancing! On Friday we put it all together in the morning with a read/sing-thru and began staging the opening which took time. It's always difficult to stage the first scene/song as you’re trying to find the right vocabulary which you’ll use to tell the entire story of the show. Once you get it, it's easy, but finding it, especially in a show like this and considering how we’re creating it, will definitely be a little tricky. Karma Camp, who’s doing the choreography, and I have been having daily discussions about "getting into the world" so we'll let you know later how we did. I also spent some time with the Maids and Cockneys going over the class system and the many different character roles they’ll be playing throughout the production.

Matt made mention of Jim Kronzer’s “stunningly simplistic” set, so I wanted to show you a little bit of what he was talking about. As you can see from the scrim elevation it's a bit different than what folks might expect, we really wanted to pay homage to the garage for our last show here. We've introduced elements of the building’s steel girders which are the structure of the environment for our production. Perhaps one of the most stunning aspects of the set is that it is entirely black. This will really bring out the characters and costumes. It's being installed in the theater right now, and it’s already looking terrific.
