MY FAIR LADY Day 7

Yesterday we spent our time putting lots of little pieces of the show together with the choreography. This is the kind of show that’s so integrated with movement and staging that Karma and I spend all of our rehearsals working together rather then in separate rooms like on a normal musical. Because our particular take on MY FAIR LADY is quite different, we've had to go with this approach. It's always great working together and bouncing ideas off each other. I keep saying, "No merry villagers!" This means I want to make sure that everyone in each scene is there on stage for a specific reason. All the movement in the show is also atypical. It becomes very stylized, even mechanical and goes into tap at points — something no one expects with this traditional show. Yesterday was also a wake up call realizing how big this show really is and how much work we need to do to get it done on time. With less than two weeks to go before tech, I realized how much more we need to cover. The schedule is very tight, but thankfully we've got a terrific cast that comes prepared and ready to work every day. It's also been very challenging because we're basically working with a blank canvas. The set design, being layers of industrial architecture, makes us come up with many ideas to reinvent the unique space. Hopefully we'll get through the first act by Friday.
