New building construction

We’re currently in a period of time at the theater without a show in rehearsal. Nevermore is running smoothly and has been extended through March 5, and The Sex Habits of American Women begins rehearsals in late February. I‘ve been asked to provide updates on our new theater construction in the interim. My name is Chris Akins and I am Signature’s Production Manager. I’m in charge of all the technical elements that go into making our shows. I’m also our point person when it comes to the construction project. Our general contractor, Structure Tone, is scheduled to begin our interior work in the next few weeks. The County has a different contractor who’s building the exterior base of the building and installing the basic systems. Structure Tone will then put in all the interior work.

There are several other key members of our team that you will be hearing about in the coming weeks. Brian Allen is our lead architect from the firm of VOA. They’ve designed an amazing interior that will be stunning when it’s all said and done. Catherine Parker is working with us as our project manager. She uses her construction expertise to help us deal with the many issues that come up during the process. Mike Mackey is our project manager from Structure Tone. He will make sure that our fit out goes smoothly. I work with these people and many more to represent Signature and to make sure that our interests are being taken care of. I’m also the one who will be in charge of keeping the building running once we move in, so I'm learning about all the complicated systems now and how the space is put together.

To say that this new space is going to be a huge change for Signature would be a major understatement. Our current space was a car bumper plating factory before Eric and the gang turned it into a theater back in the day. Our new space is actually designed to be a theater. It has all the technical systems for lighting and sound built in that we don’t really have here. It’s also twice the square footage of what we currently have. The public spaces are going to be a drastic change as well. In our current building we have a cramped lobby with not enough bathrooms. The new building has a large lobby that is very open with many trendy bathrooms. It’s truly an exciting project.

I go over to the site 2-3 times a week for various meetings and to check up on the construction progress. Every time I do, I get more excited. The space is going to be very unique and one that people are really going to be impressed by. When I go into Studio 1, which is the bigger theater of the two, I always get a little shiver. I can picture the set in there as the audience comes in for that first preview in September. It’s going to be a really amazing thing. While the new digs are much fancier then what we have now, we’re trying to keep the same feel of our current space. The slogan for the new building project is “The Signature you know and love, only better.” I think that hits home and we’re bringing a lot of the things that got us to where we are today with us when we move.

The theaters excite me, but so does the rest of the building. Our day to day operations are going to be so much easier with our new facilities. We’ll have efficient offices with new furniture, the building will actually have the power installed to handle what we need to do, there will be ample dressing and rehearsal rooms for the actors, and all of the systems to produce a show will be in place. Over the next couple of weeks I’ll try and post some photos to show you what our new building is going to be like. It’s truly going to be an amazing place and seeing a show there is going to be a fantastic experience.
