Juggling live action and film rehearsals

We just finished our first week of rehearsals and I can honestly say I’m more excited about this play than ever. So far, rehearsals have been structured in a pretty typical fashion: an initial read-through of the play with the cast; discussions about the play and the themes it addresses — in our case, comparing the lives of women in the 1950's to today, America’s constantly changing attitudes about sex, the history of sexual studies and research, etc.; and table-work where we rehearse scenes in detail before the actors are thrown to their feet and have to deal with blocking, props, furniture, etc. What’s unique about this play is that in addition to the live action on stage there are filmed portions interspersed. So for the first two weeks I’m rehearsing the film actors for half the day and the on-stage actors the other half.

The film portions involve a modern-day woman being interviewed in her home for a documentary called “The Sex Habits of American Women.” I’m rehearsing these scenes by filming rough versions in the rehearsal room. Then we’re going on location this Friday to film the final scenes at a home in Annandale, VA (it’s actually my brother and sister-in-law’s house — thanks Kevin, Dawn and 11 month old Freddie!).

The live action portions of the play take place in 1950 and involve the family of a professor who is writing a book entitled “The Sex Habits of American Women.” It’s been interesting to figure out how the film and live portions of the play inform each other.

Here’s a list of the characters in the play and the outstanding actors playing them:

On film in 2006:
Joy, a single mom played by Amy McWilliams
Katie, her teenage daughter played by Megan MacPhee
Dan, a documentary film maker played by Paul Morella

On stage in the 1950’s:
Dr. Fritz Tittles, a German psychoanalyst played by Ralph Cosham
Agnes Tittles, wife to Dr. Tittles played by Helen Hedman
Daisy Tittles, daughter of Fritz and Agnes played by Teresa Castracane
Ruby Lawrence, Daisy’s friend played by Casie Platt
Edgar Green, a young psychoanalyst and former student of Dr. Tittles’ played by Will Gartshore
